IKEA XMAS TV SCRIPT

Every Christmas, companies dream of making the festive season all about their brand. And the way to do it is to come up with the best, heartwarming commercial of all. The brief was simple - create a sequel to the “English for beginners” ad from Allegro. So we did, but instead of grandpa learning English we proposed a story about a small girl who had colorful dreams and was very committed in pursuit of them.

I was responsible for:

  • creating the idea and writing the TV script.

The rainbow girl

TVC 60’

Music: Sleeping at Last – Rainbow Connection.

The song is a very important and an inseparable part of the story.

The story begins in a living room. We see a 6-year-old girl sitting on her grandpa’s knees. The man is reading her a fairytale about a girl who caught a rainbow and found a pot of gold at the end of it. The girl is looking at the illustrations with her eyes wide open. It’s clear that she’s fascinated. After finishing the story, grandpa does a magic trick and finds a golden chocolate coin behind granddaughter’s ear. The girl is delighted and we see her smile, her eyes wide with wonder. Next, we see that the grandfather falls asleep on his chair. Next to him, on the floor, lies his bag filled with chocolates coins. We see a child’s hand reaching for the bag and grabbing it quickly. This is the moment when the story speeds up.

The next four scenes are shot as dynamic cuts.

We see our young heroine outside the house, observing her father who is shoveling the snow from the driveway. As he digs into the snow and throws it through the air, a small rainbow appears in the flying water crystals. The girl starts jumping around, trying to catch it, but her tired father asks her to stop. To make her feel better he gives her a chocolate bar.

The family are on their way back home from doing the grocery shopping. The father is holding two paper bags filled with food, his wife is walking by his side, and their daughter is riding hers bicycle next to them. It’s a sunny winter day, and it’s snowing gently. Suddenly the sun comes out from behind the clouds and a rainbow appears in the sky. The girl starts pointing at it, shouting with enthusiasm to her father. Clearly, she wants to cycle in that direction, but the father looks at her, gesturing that they have to go. He lifts his bag a little bit higher to show his daughter that inside of it there is an advent calendar (a piece of it sticks out of the bag). The girl accompanies her father with a mysterious look on her face.

We’re in the living room. It’s afternoon. We see our girl sitting bored in front of the window, watching snowflakes melt on the glass. She’s resting her cheeks on her hands. Suddenly, she sees a reflection of a rainbow in one big raindrop falling down the surface of a glass. She turns back quickly, hoping to see an actual rainbow. Unfortunately, it was only her parents decorating the Christmas tree with colorful ornaments, lights, candy canes and gingerbread cookies. The girl looks disappointed but after a second a subtle, rakish smile appears on her face, showing a new plan has popped into her head.

It’s Boxing Day. We see the sleepy parents and grandfather coming down the stairs. Suddenly, they stop and open their eyes wide in shock. Cut to the living room, where only yesterday there was a Christmas tree. Now only a bare fir tree is standing in the corner and all the Christmas decorations are gone. The camera pans, and in the corner, where at first it wasn’t visible, a great surprise appears before their eyes. A colourful rainbow on the wall, made of all the Christmas lamps and ornaments. At the end of the rainbow there are all the sweets the girl has collected. She finishes placing a giant kitchen IKEA pot filled with all the golden chocolate coins at the end of the rainbow, then stands up and we see her smiling proudly. Cut to the parents and the grandpa smiling, visibly touched by the girl’s creativity and kindness.
